Lung cancer is a serious health problem, it is essentially the growth of abnormal cells in the lungs.

This growth of unhealthy cells can start anywhere in the lungs.

Lung cancer is actually the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. Of those people who contract lung cancer, less than half of them survive one year. The quicker you notice symptom and have it diagnosed, the quicker treatment can begin and the odds improve.

The leading cause of lung cancer is smoking. eighty seven percent of people who have lung cancer have gotten it from smoking.

If a person smokes a pack a day, they have twenty times the risk of getting lung cancer or some other serious health problem than a person who doesn’t smoke at all.

There are so many carcinogens in tobacco smoke that they constantly damage the healthy cells of the lungs, and the risk goes up for smokers depending on how long they have smoked and how much they have smoked.

There are other causes of lung cancer for healthy people who don’t smoke

These causes include asbestos, which used to be used in building materials. It enters a healthy person’s lungs by inhaling, and then attaches to the respiratory lining.

People who get lung cancer from asbestos exposure usually get it from work or from living in an older home.

Some doctors also think that women who are exposed to tobacco smoke, are more likely to have lung cancer than men exposed to smoke. Researchers have found a gene called GRPR which causes unusual cell growth in people exposed to cigarette smoke. This gene is more active in women than in men and may explain why females are more prone to lung cancer.

Some research has indicated a diet low in fruit and vegetables may increase the chances of developing cancer if exposed to tobacco smoke. Some evidence shows fruit and vegetables may protect against lung cancer.

The final cause of lung cancer in healthy people is radon exposure.

Radon is a gas which is naturally released from soil and rocks. In closed spaces like caves, basements and other areas, it can become concentrated and cause lung cancer or other health problems. It is always a good idea to have a home checked for radon levels because there are things that can be done to lower them to more acceptable levels.

The good news?

When smokers quit smoking, their risk for getting lung cancer goes down immediately and every year that they don’t smoke.

It is also an interesting fact that 25% of nonsmokers that get lung cancer live with smokers, so the secondhand smoke is most likely the cause of their lung cancer health issues.

so ive ben reading alot about asbestos and silica and dust and long term exposure causing lung disease and death
well, the A/C unit in my part of the house is VERY OLD ,and is SOOOO dusty…alll of te “grilles” ,the white metal bars where the air comes out always has alot of dust around it, espeically under it, and the ac unit closet itself is really dusty, so it leads to think that dust is constantly being blown by the A/C
to make matters worse, i think the duct is made out of abestos
ALSO…i think the duct may pass through the attic which is full of white wool, glass wool, rock wool, or something. the ac duct is right above my bed(and theres a second not far off)
is all that dust abestos(if it is actually asbestos) im breathing in now going to affect me later in life? and kill me? im 17, ive lived in this house for 14 years.
my questions are
-what is this stuff, abestos,what?
-if im 17 now, will it really last into my 80s?
-health risks?
-signigifcance of exposure?
-is there a lung test i can do, to see if i have these pieces?
the house was built in the 1920s or 30s, but obviously it has been redone many times. i do think the A/C duct is asbestos though; wouldnt the dust got blown in my room?

In addition to containing many toxic gases, the tar found in your favorite brand has a lot of cancer-causing substances (carcinogens) as well as carcinogens which increase the production of cancer cells.

Lung Cancer Stages Survival

This leads to the development of small cell (oat) carcinoma, the deadliest form of lung cancer, and squamous cell cancer – both of which are usually found in smokers.

“Your risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, the number of years you smoke, the amount of smoke you inhale, and the amount of tar and nicotine in the cigarettes you smoke,” said Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the “Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.”

While lung cancer is primarily a male problem, many women now have the disease, probably because the number of female smokers has increased. In the United States, lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer in terms of cancer deaths in women.

“The higher rates of tobacco-related cancers among men reflect the fact that in the past, more men than women smoked, and smoked heavily. In recent years, the proportion of smokers among males has been steadily decreasing in many developed countries. Unfortunately, the proportion of smokers among women has been steadily increasing all over the world,” according to Drs. Adriano V. Laudico, Divina B. Esteban, Corazon A. Ngelangel, and Lilia M. Reyes in “Cancer Facts and Estimates.”

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

“With many more women smoking than ever before, the number of women with lung cancer has increased at an alarming rate, so that smoking is now responsible for 75 percent of all lung cancers in women. The cancer rate for female smokers is 67 percent higher than for nonsmokers,” said Marrion Morra, assistant director of the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut, and Eve Potts in “Choices: Realistic Alternatives in Cancer Treatment.”

Even nonsmokers aren’t spared from the onslaught of lung cancer. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 500 and 5,000 cases of lung cancer appear each year in nonsmokers as a result of inhaling someone else’s smoke. The side stream smoke inhaled by a nonsmoker has a higher percentage of tar, nicotine, and other poisonous gases – all of which contribute to lung cancer.

“The tobacco industry likes to tell people that there are other causes of lung cancer. But there is no denying the fact that smoking is a major cause of the disease. I don’t think we have to look for other causes,” said Dr. Calixto Zaldivar, former director of the Lung Center of the Philippines.

Other risk factors for lung cancer include exposure to industrial carcinogens such as asbestos, chromium compounds, radioactive ores, nickel, arsenic, and other irritating substances.

“A worker in these kinds of industries who smokes faces an even greater risk. If you are over 40, smoke two packs a day, and/or are in an occupation that is thought to be cancer producing, you should have frequent medical checkups,” Morra and Potts said. (Tomorrow: How to prevent lung cancer.)

This is some really dreadful material and has demonstrated to lead to cancer and other lung

related Lung Cancer Statistics By State diseases. Asbestos removal is a time consuming and cautious practice and must always

be left to professional asbestos removal companies. Asbestos could be discovered in siding,

ceiling tiles, insulation, dry wall tape and compound, roofing, flooring (particularly

linoleum and vinyl), paints, plasters and other building materials.

Linoleum and floor tile products are typically non-friable, indicating that they do not

generate dust. However, as such products age, they are likely to become friable – apt to

crumbling, which in turn could release asbestos fibers into the air. Linoleum and floor tile

installers ought to be conscious of this when replacing aged and worn flooring.

There is no assessable risk to healthiness from the asbestos content in your linoleum tiles

and any contractor who tries to force you to remove it based on this is trying to take

advantage of your ignorance. Likewise, there is no law demanding that you remove the linoleum

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

tiles so don’t let anybody let know you this is a lawful requirement.

Though posing no assessable risk to healthiness, and not needing to be controlled by licensed

contractors, asbestos containing linoleum tiles and related products do still require to be

taken to an especially licensed tip.

A lot of experts state that instead of removing the asbestos vinyl, risking more exposure

because of disrupting the tiles, you could perform a better job of keep the exposure limited

or latent simply by covering it up. Accomplishing this will prevent harm that could lead to a

release in asbestos fibers, risking the possibility of inhalation. If you are making use of

carpet to cover up the vinyl, ensure you are utilizing a well insulated carpet pad. If the

asbestos vinyl is in your kitchen area, think about covering it up with a ceramic tile or

distinct linoleum.

Many people are affected by Asbestos related diseases throughout the UK. It is estimated that Asbestos affects as many as 1 in 100 men over the age of 40 in this Country as well as an increasing number of women. Exposure to Asbestos dust can damage the fibrous tissue in the lungs.

Claims can be made by Claimants, even though the exposure was 30 or more years ago, and the past employer(s) has gone out of business.

Claims can also be made for deceased Claimants on behalf of their loved ones/estate.

Successful ‘secondary’ claims for Asbestos have been won by Widows of those exposed, after suffering lung damage merely from handling/washing clothes and overalls containing harmful asbestos fibres, and even Grandchildren have received compensation, after contracting lung conditions merely from sitting on Granddad’s knee when he was still wearing his work clothes.

The compensation obtained can, in many cases, amount to well in excess of £100,000 pounds, depending upon the severity of the particular disease.

Asbestos has no respect for socio-economic group or occupation. There are over 1,000 new cases of Mesothelioma reported every year in the UK. It is generally accepted asbestos is the cause.

The types of occupation where exposure can be found/occur include the following:-

Asbestos Cement Products Industry (used for strong, inexpensive building materials, eg tiles, corrugated roofing, gutters, water and drain pipes, chimneys etc.

Floor tiling industry

Insulation and Fire Proofing

Carpenters

Electricians

Power Plant Works

Plumbers

Roofers

Central Heating and/or air conditioning contractors

School and Hospital workers

Ship workers

Symptoms can include breathlessness and persistent coughing which may cause sleepless nights leading to fatigue. Some sufferers report chest pain and feeling as though a heavy weight is pressing down on their chest, depending upon the particular condition.

There are a number of state benefits available to victims and their carers. A specialist asbestos solicitor can not only pursue compensation claims for sufferers on a true No Win No Fee* basis, but also provide advice and assistance with applications in order to maximise benefit entitlement.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the thin lining that covers and holds in our internal organs. Asbestos is the cause of approximately 90 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Anyone who has worked in an industry or lived in an area where asbestos exposure has occurred may be entitled to damages if they’ve developed mesothelioma. If you or someone you know have developed mesothelioma, here are some asbestos litigation facts that might help you as you explore your own litigation options.

Because the disease may not develop for up to sixty years after asbestos exposure, asbestos litigation often doesn’t take place until long after the fact. A sum of roughly $9 million was awarded in an asbestos lawsuit to a gentleman in 2005 after he developed mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure that occurred in the 1960s. Another woman was awarded $16 million in 2002 for mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure in childhood. One important asbestos litigation fact to keep in mind is that you may be suffering from asbestos-related mesothelioma even if your exposure took place decades ago. Even though a lot of time has passed, you could still have a case.

Another important asbestos litigation fact to keep in mind is that the government passed the FAIR Act in 2005. The FAIR Act provides vital facts for anyone considering asbestos litigation. Included are requirements for bringing asbestos litigation and who might have a case. There is a statute of limitations on filing asbestos litigation, so it is important that you know whether or not time has run out on your case.

Because asbestos is no longer used, many of the companies against which someone might want to file a claim have gone out of business. Still, a company may exist that is partially responsible for your mesothelioma. If you’re interested in finding out who may be at fault, seek the advice of legal counsel who can help you with your asbestos litigation.

Persistent diseases like lung cancer and mesothelioma was extremely common in construction workers who were exposed to asbestos fibers or dust, doctors began making a connection between asbestos and mesothelioma. Shipping, construction and other workers, who were exposed to asbestos from the 1950s to the 1970s, when the dangers of asbestos was being recognized, are still suffering from the ill effects of asbestos exposure at work. More and more cases of people working under asbestos were infected with mesothelioma. So, Asbestos was considered a cause of mesothelioma. Various laws and regulations are in place, which is designed to prevent workers from exposure to toxic asbestos.

Workers who may have been exposed to asbestos in the 1970s, they are showing the symptoms of mesothelioma now. The reason behind this is that mesothelioma is slow to manifest. Mesothelioma cannot be diagnosed during its early stages. Because its symptoms take too long to manifest and it is often mistaken with those of other diseases, mesothelioma can be mistaken as pneumonia or other diseases during its early stages. The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, abdominal swelling, chest pain, chronic cough, fever, weight loss, etc.

Different laws and regulations have limited the use of asbestos; mesothelioma takes a long period to develop means that it still has a large number of probable victims. Professions with the risk for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma are those which involved repeated exposure to asbestos in its industrial forms. These professions could be electricians, construction workers, bricklayers, mechanics, insulators and people involved with commercial or home construction before the 1970s.The families of these workers or people were also at risk, since they may have inhaled asbestos through the employee’s clothing or hair.

As more and people are getting aware of mesothelioma and asbestos there has been a significant amount of increase in lawsuits against companies who irresponsibly used asbestos, exposing their employees to the threat of mesothelioma and other life-threatening asbestos-related illnesses. If you were exposed to asbestos at any period of time you can get yourself diagnosed for mesothelioma. A mesothelioma sufferer or his family can contact an asbestos attorney who is experienced in mesothelioma litigation. A mesothelioma lawyer will help the person recover damages for the pain and suffering incurred through asbestos exposure.

Many people have now started to seek the help of asbestos lawyers who can provide specialist advice and claims for victims of asbestos related illnesses. This is because they may be able to successfully recover compensation for themselves and family members who have not had direct asbestos exposure but have developed diseases through the dust on the working clothes of someone who has. They can help with things such as costs for care and loss of earnings.

Although it has now been banned in the European Union it was once used as an insulating material around pipes and boilers. It could also be found in fibreboard, roofing and guttering. Inevitably this means that people who worked in particular trades will be more likely than others to contract diseases such as asbestos lung cancer as they were exposed to it more.

Examples of jobs where people would have been likely to suffer asbestos exposure include electricians, plumbers, dockers, shipyard workers, power station workers and roofers. However, it isn’t just the working environment where people will have encountered asbestos. Those living close to factories, children who played near the factories and anyone who washed clothes contaminated with it may find themselves at risk from illnesses such as asbestos lung cancer.

Prolonged asbestos exposure may result in contracting one of several illnesses that can be caused by it. However this may not happen immediately as it can take between 10 and 60 years for some symptoms to develop. Some of the illnesses that may occur include Mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, pleural thickening and pleural plaques. They can vary in severity from pleural plaques which cause no physical disability or symptoms to mesothelioma which is perhaps the most serious condition.

If you need an asbestos lawyer, they may be able to recover substantial compensation payments for:

-General damages including pain and suffering

-Loss of earnings whether it is in the past or future

-Loss of pension rights

-Care

-Services

-Any out of pocket expenses you may have incurred

There is a time limit regarding when you can claim any damages against asbestos exposure as they are subject to strict compliance with the Limitation Act 1990. This states that proceedings must be issued in Court within three years of learning that you may suffer from an asbestos related illness. Not many people know the ins and outs of the legal side of claiming compensation which is why an asbestos lawyer may be able to help.

Asbestos sitting in lot for months, garbage company ordered to remove it
(WHAS11) – A garbage removal company has been ordered to get rid of asbestos that has been sitting in its lot for months; a possible violation of EPA regulations. The reason? The company has gone out of business because the owner ended up in jail. According to sources, the trash has been sitting in the company’s back lot for more than half a year. Local residents have been upset about opossums …

Mining and commercial use of asbestos began in the 1800s, and grew significantly during World War II. Its popularity came to an abrupt halt in the 1970s however, when the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission passed the first laws banning its use in certain products, because the asbestos fibers were being released into the environment.

In the 1980s, the Environmental Protection Agency added to those laws by banning any new uses for it, although laws still allowed for the use of it in any way that existed prior to that time. Despite the attention given to asbestos exposure, beginning with those laws, there are still many people who are unaware of what it is or what harm it presents to those who are exposed to it.

It is a mineral that occurs naturally in fiber bundles, and the bundles can be separated into individual fibers. Asbestos fibers are resistant to heat, fire and chemicals, and they do not conduct electricity. With those characteristics, products containing asbestos were a perfect fit for many construction and manufacturing industries.

Asbestos products include brake shoes and clutch pads for automobiles, insulation for boilers and steam pipes on ships, and strengthening agents for cement and talc-based crayons. In the construction industry, asbestos fibers are used in ceiling tiles, paint that is lead based, plastics, adhesives, soundproofing material and insulation. As long as the fibers are encased and contained, with little chance of exposure under normal conditions, all of these uses are legal.

Unfortunately, asbestos exposure can carry significant health risks, some of which are untreatable and incurable at the present time. One of the most common diseases resulting from exposure to it is asbestosis, sometimes called asbestos lung, which is a chronic inflammation of the lungs that leads to shortness of breath, coughing, and even permanent lung damage.

Another source of asbestos litigation is for mesothelioma, which is a cancer that develops in the protective lining of the body’s major organs. The two most common forms are pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining around the lungs, and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the lining around the heart.

Despite centuries of asbestos mining and usage, asbestos exposure has only recently been recognized as a health hazard. Because symptoms of exposure can take 10 to 50 years to show up, it took medical professionals a great deal of time to connect the disease to it.

As asbestos litigation becomes more common, the use of this substance has, in most applications, declined. Asbestos fibers are still legal, despite the hazards of exposure, only if manufacturers follow all legally required safety standards.
